OBJECTIVES: By the end of this lesson the students will be able to:

  1. Explain the meaning of batik.
  2. List the materials and tools needed for batik.
  3. Describe the steps involved in batik production.
  4. Draw designs on fabric, apply wax to the design and dye.

MEANING: Batik is a form of textile design which traditionally involves the use of manual wax-resist, dying technique. The batik process is another popular dye resist technique in which the design is applied to the material with a substance (wax) that will resist the action of the dye. Batik originated in Java, the most populated island in Indonesia.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS FOR BATIK

  1. Wax (paraffin wax/beeswax or candle wax)
  2. Pencil or pen,
  3. Chalk or charcoal
  4. Cotton material
  5. Dye stuff
  6. Water

TOOLS

  1. Tjanting (a special tool used by professional batik designer that produces interesting linear effect)
  2. Foam, bristle brushes, stamp
  3. Old roasting pan or empty beverage tin.
  4. Plastic bucket/bowl to be used as dye bath
  5. Rubber gloves
  6. Lots of old newspapers and towel
  7. Electric iron
  8. Heat source.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Wash, dry and iron the material to be dyed to remove any sizing
