WHOLE NUMBERS IN STANDARD FORM

            A number is said to be in standard form if it is expressed in the form of A x 10ⁿ. Where  and  is an integer (positive or negative whole numbers). Standard form is very useful in field of sciences and social sciences for easy presentations and analysis. Examples of numbers in standard form includes: 4 x 10⁹, 5.8 x 10², 5.62 x 10⁴, etc

Examples:

1. Write the following in standard form:

(a) 90 000 000  (b) 6 000 000 000 000 000 000         (c) 34256.189   (d) 879.45

Solutions

(a). 90 000 000 = 9 x 10 000 000 = 9 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 9 x 10⁷

(b). 6 x 1000 000 000 000 000 000 = 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10  = 6 X 10¹⁸

(c). 34256.189 = 3.4256189 x 10 000 = 3.4256189 x 10⁴

(d). 879.45 = 8.7945 x 100 =   8.7945 10 x 10 = 8.7945 x 10²

2. Express each of the following in ordinary forms or full figures:

(a). 7.879 x 10⁵           (b). 6.209 x 10⁴           (c). 4.231 x 10⁶

Solutions:

(a). 7.879 x 10⁵ = 7.879 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 7.879 x 100 000 = 787900

(b). 6.209 x 10⁴ = 6.209 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 6.209 x 10 000 = 62090

(c). 4.231 x 10⁶ = 4.231 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 4.231 x 1 000 000 = 42310000

2. Rewrite each of the following in ordinary forms

• 00009 x 10⁵ (b) 8.543 x 10^-4    (c) 6.653 x 10^-6
