CONTENT: Meaning of Home Economics

Sub-Topic 1: Meaning of Home Economics.

Home Economics can be defined as a field that is concerned with improving family life. It thus this by:

  1. Finding out the needs of individuals and families.
  2. Finding ways of meeting individuals and families.
  3. Preparing people for family living and employment.

Scope (areas in Home Economics):  Home Economics is made up of many areas. These areas can be grouped into seven major areas.

The seven areas are:

  1. Foods and Nutrition: This deals with the study of foods and their nutrients.
  2. Clothing and textile: It deal with designing and sewing of clothes. It also includes wise selection clothes, personal hygiene and good grooming.
  • Home Management: This deals with processes of using those things which the family has, to obtain the things needed by the family e.g money, time, energy, etc.
  1. Consumer Education: It teaches people how to make wise decision in selecting or buying goods and services.
  2. House and interior decoration: deals with provision of housing for the family.
  3. Child development and care: it deals with how children grow and develop. It also deals with how to care for children properly.
  • Family living: it deals with how people live in the family. It teaches people how to maintain good relationship in the family.

In Nigerian schools and colleges, Home Economics is however, broadly divided into three areas; Foods and nutrition, Home management, Clothing and textiles.
