TOPIC: ENERGY

SUB-TOPIC: TRANSFORMATION OF ENERGY

Energy changes happen daily around us. The law of Conservation of energy states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed but it can change from one form to another. The following are examples of transformation of energy:

  1. Mechanical Energy à Heat energy e.g. Rubbing two surfaces against each other
  2. Chemical energy à Light energy e.g. torch light battery.
  3. Sound Energy à Electrical energy e.g. Microphone, loudspeaker
  4. Electrical energyà Sound energy e.g. Electrical bell
  5. Chemical energy à Heat energy e.g. Gas cooker
  6. Mechanical energy àSound energy e.g. time keeper ringing the school bell
  7. Chemical energyàMechanical energy e.g. moving car
  8. Radiant energyàChemical energy e.g. photosynthesis (Plants make food)
  9. Electrical energy àThermal energy (heat)
  10. Electric energy à Mechanical energy e.g. electric motor

Series and Parallel Circuits

A circuit is the path of an electric current. In a series circuit, electric current flows in a single path. If you turn a light switch off, for instance, or if one light bulb along the pathway burns out, a break in the path occurs and the electric current stops flowing to both light bulbs. In a parallel circuit, electric current flows in more than one path. When a break occurs in one path, such as when one of the light bulbs burns out, the other light bulb stays lit because the electric current continues to flow to it.
