UNIJOS killings: NANS Summons Emergency Security Summit
Quote from Sunday on ,The National Association of Nigerian Students on Monday raised fears over the continued spate of killings in the nation’s tertiary institutions saying students were no longer safe.
The organisation also described it as disgraceful, ridiculous and reckless, the killings in Plateau and attack on students at the Naraguta campus of the University of Jos.
The president of NANS, Sunday Asefon, who said these during a press conference in Abuja titled, ‘Jos killings: Disgraceful, reckless, condemnable act’, said he had summoned an emergency students national security summit scheduled for October 28, 2021.
“We will vigorously pursue compensation for the families of our slain members and many of our students who lost valuables to this emergency and ensure that justice is adequately served to the perpetrators of this evil act,” he said.
Asefon said the security summit would bring together critical stakeholders in all the tertiary institutions in Nigeria; Students’ Union Governments, security and education sectors.
A decisive part of the summit, he said, would be held in closed door to ensure that decisions and new innovations towards safer school only got to the accredited stakeholders in the summit.
He said, “We have followed carefully the security development in Plateau State in the last few days resulting in the killings of innocent Nigerians and most, unfortunately, the killing of innocent students of UNIJOS.
“This crisis is not only disgraceful, ridiculous, and reckless but it is condemnable in the strongest terms. NANS, while still overwhelmed by the spate of the kidnapping of students in the North-West and North-Central, cannot grasp the motivation behind these senseless killings. NANS as an association has been gravely affected by this crisis.”
