NGO Trains Teachers and Ogun Pupils on Mental Arithmetic
Quote from Sunday on ,Pupils of some public secondary schools in Remo, Ogun state have been trained in two hands system of mental arithmetic to improve their performances in Mathematics and other subjects.
Some teachers were also trained in the same subject to meet the 21st century requirements for all subjects.
The training which was organised by the Remo Growth and Development Foundation , an non-governmental organisation took place in the Sagamu area of the state .
Head of the Directorate of the RGD, Prof. Adewale Solarin, said the essence of the training was to enhance the pupils’ skills in mathematics and other subjects with a view to broadening their knowledge and understanding of different subjects, improving their speed and accuracy skills.
Solarin added that the concept of two-hand mental arithmetic required training of the right and left brain simultaneously to boost concentration, accuracy and focus abilities in pupils from age five to 15.
He noted that the sole aim of the programme was to improve the performances of students in not just maths but virtually every subject.
He added that the importance of any training for teachers is significant to improve pupils’ performance.
Solarin, a professor of Mathematics said, “This is done to improve the performances of students in not just maths but virtually every subject. One of the problems of the African child is timidity. Timidity has a way of affecting students’ performance in school.
“Mental arithmetic is the focus but we want to achieve early confidence, courage and competence. If you can remove timidity in the African child, it’s going to help a lot.”
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, stated that the programme would impact on the future of Nigeria if it was taken seriously in the country.
Arigbabu hinted that the training which had begun in Remo would be extended to other parts of the state for the benefits of more teachers and students.
