What is a career?

A career is a job by which a person earns a living and spends time doing. It is a job that a person has been trained for, and which he or she does for a long period of their life. Our careers enable us to earn some income in order to live and make contributions to our society and environment. Careers are generally long-term or life-long activities. They usually require extensive education or specialised training. Other names for career are vocation, profession, occupation, or livelihood.

Types of career

There are numerous examples of types of careers. Can you mention some? In our first Bible text, Cain was a farmer. His career was farming, and Abel was a shepherd. His career was animal rearing. Below is a list of careers:

1 Architecture

2 Banking

3 Carpentry

4 Hair-making

5 Accounting

6 Driving

7 Physiotherapy

8 Piloting

9 Engineering

10 Journalism

11Teaching

12 Cattle rearing

13Acting

14 Law

15 Counselling

16 Medicine etc.

How to choose your future career

Getting involved in any career will require spending a lot of time on it. There will be time spent preparing oneself for a particular profession, time spent learning about the profession, and time spent practising or engaging in the profession. It is, therefore, important that we choose careers that interest us, and which we find enjoyable to do. One major way of deciding on a career is to determine what we like,

what we are good at, and what we enjoy doing. Our natural hobbies, gifts and interests such as singing, talking, dancing, reading, writing, learning, making friends and travelling, can help us in choosing careers that we will enjoy and be good at. Also, the school subjects we enjoy and at which we do very well, give us an indication of the type of career to choose.

For example, a person who enjoys needlework, home economics and art subjects in school, or who enjoys meeting people, may choose a career in catering or tailoring. Another person may enjoy singing, acting or speaking to people in public, and so may choose a career in acting, entertainment, public speaking or in political science. Some other person who enjoys learning about how the human body functions may decide to choose a career in medicine. Another example is that a person who enjoys mathematics might choose a career in accounting, while another who enjoys working with plants may decide to go into agriculture and become a farmer, or may choose botany as a field of study. You can also make a career choice by studying yourself, what you like doing, the subjects you are good at, and your natural gifts. At other times, a career choice can be made based on the solution we want to bring to the world’s problems. Drugs and inventions such as paracetamol, cholera and polio vaccines; the light bulb, the telephone, radio, television, and aeroplanes were invented because scientists and inventors who invented them wanted to find a solution to the related illness or problems for the whole world to benefit.

The dignity of labour

Working to earn a living is a respectable virtue. There is great value in working,

and nothing should make us ashamed of the work we do. We must take pride and honour in doing honest work. This is referred to as dignity of labour. From our third Bible text, we can discover many advantages of working

These include:

1 Working prevents us from being beggars.

2 Working prevents us from becoming a burden to others.

3 Working enables us to earn the respect of others.

4 Working prevents us from becoming disorderly and confused.

When we work in a career we enjoy, we gain satisfaction, independence and confidence. We gain satisfaction because we are doing something we enjoy doing and are able to make contributions to others. We gain independence when we work, because we have a means of livelihood and would not need to depend on people to take care of us. And we have confidence because of the value our work brings to people’s lives and the environment.
