7 Reasons Why Candidates Fail 2013 Biology WAEC Theory

Observed candidates’ weaknesses are as follows:

  1. Inability to spell technical terms correctly, e.g., ‘Malphighian’ ‘Anenometer’ ‘hydrometer’ for ‘Malpighian’, ‘Anemometer’ and ‘hygrometer’;
  2. poor presentation and arrangement of points to score;
  3. poor use of English and illegible handwriting;
  4. lengthy explanations without relevant points to the question asked;
  5. inability to write a balanced equation representing photosynthesis;
  6. in adherence to instructions. Some candidates answered more than two questions from part I, and some answered questions from the part peculiar to other countries;
  7. giving the general function of kidney instead of how the nephron carries out excretion.

Chief Examiner’s Recommendations

The following solutions were suggested in minimizing the annual number of failures in the biology exam.

  1. School Subject Teachers should pay more attention to conservation and the description of cycles alongside their diagrams
  2. The major products of light-dependent stage of photosynthesis should be emphasized by the teachers in the classroom
  3. Teachers should inculcate the culture of independent work on students
  4. Teachers should endeavour to cover the syllabus before students take the examination
  5. Students should improve on their written English so as to help them in answering questions
  6. Candidates should read and understand a question before attempting it

Candidates’ Strength

The observed strengths of the candidates this year include:

  1. mentioning of body parts responsible for specific functions;
  2. stating clearly the external and internal factors required for photosynthesis to take place;
  3. having a good grasp of some of the tested concepts like biosphere, population, community and ecosystem;
  4. providing concise one-word answers;
  5. displaying good knowledge of photosynthesis and respiration.
