6 Reasons Why Candidates Fail 2015 Geography Theory WAEC

Reasons why candidates fail 2015 geography theory WAEC are partly similar with previous years, this buttresses the need for the prospective candidates and even the instructors to adhere to the council’s observation. The fact that the reasons were noted in ’15 has nothing to do with the WAEC examination standard, failure to adhere won’t go unpunished.

Candidates’ Weaknesses

The weaknesses highlighted below were observed in the candidates’ scripts:

  1. Poor map outline

Some of the candidates drew poor map outline and were unable to locate the features on the map correctly. Some of them did not use keys in the map to show the features represented. This made them lose precious marks.

  1. Misinterpretation of questions

Some candidates did not read the questions to the point of understanding before attempting them. This was probably due to the fact that they had poor understanding of English Language which is the language of communication.

  1. Mere listing of points

Some candidates failed to provide explanations to the points which they listed. This made them lose precious marks.

  1. Violation of rubrics

Some candidates did not obey the rubrics. Rather than answering two questions each from sections A and B, some of them answered the three questions in section A and answered only one question from section B.

Suggested Remedies to Candidates’ Weaknesses

Chief examiner submitted the following remedies as an antidote to suppress the prevailing weaknesses observed in the year and even for prospective candidates

  1. Drawing of good map outlines

Drawing is an art that could be mastered through practise. If candidates practise map drawing, they will get used to drawing good maps.

  1. Correct interpretation of questions

Since the questions were clearly worded and devoid of ambiguity, there was no justification for misinterpretation, candidates should familiarize themselves with the pattern of asking questions by practising past questions. A mastery of the use of English Language would also be of help to the candidates.

  1. Adequate explanation of points

Candidates are advised against mere listing of points since this will not earn them full marks. They are advised to adequately explain their points to score full marks.

  1. Obedience to the rubrics

Rubrics are meant to be obeyed by all candidates. Candidates are advised to adhere to all rubrics on their question papers.

Candidates’ Strengths

So many candidates observed the rubrics; quite a good number of them explained the points raised in good English which made them score good marks.
