4 Reasons Why Candidates Fail Physics 2011 WAEC

Physics calls for smartness and accuracy when solving mathematical problems, shear insensitivity and hasty among the students have been identified as one of the chief reasons for failure. As WAEC tradition, the following are the reasons why candidates fail physics 2011 WAEC. Prospective candidates are strongly advice to improve where necessary.

Candidates Weakness

The inadequacies in the performance of candidates were attributed to the following weaknesses:

1. poor interpretation of questions
2. poor skill in arithmetic
3. inadequate knowledge of basic concepts in Physics
4. inability to apply knowledge sufficiently

suggested Remedies

The suggested remedies were as follows:

1. physics teachers should strive harder to ensure adequate coverage of the syllabus at all times.
2. meaningful test items should be administered from time to time, and matched with true assessments.
3. enough time should be allocated for physics on school’s time table.
4. teacher’s adequacy should be examined by seasoned and more experienced physics teachers to create rooms for improvement in delivery.
5. physics teachers should participate in WASSCE coordination exercise.
6. WAEC should make impromptu inspection of schools’ laboratories in order to checkmate inadequacies.
7. school libraries should be stocked with enough recommended physics textbooks.

Candidates Strength

There was better awareness- of candidates’ assimilation of some concepts as evident in better and widespread of attempted question like:

1. motion under gravity
2. uses of Polaroid
3. uses of electrolysis in industry
4. upthrust
5. properties of cathode rays
6. definition of a vector quantity
7. evaporation
