4 Reasons Why Candidates Fail 2018 Geography Map Reading in WAEC

Having carefully examined the year’s general performance in Data processing WAEC, the followings were identified as the leading reasons why candidates fail 2018 Geography map reading in WAEC. None of WAEC observation get close to personal reasons that candidate may attached to their failure. Prospective candidates and geography instructors are therefore advice to take a careful read on the post.

Candidates’ Weaknesses

The weaknesses observed on the candidates’ scripts are explained below:

  1. Poor map work

The map reading work was poorly done as many candidates could not draw the cross profile from A – B correctly.

Some of them could not also describe the influence of relief on the settlement in the mapped area.

  1. Poor performance in the question on statistical mapping.

Many of the candidates who attempted the question on flow chart could not Correctly draw the flow lines using the specified scale.

  1. Violation of rubrics

Some candidates violated the rubrics on the question paper. Rubrics are Meant to be obeyed.

  1. Scanty knowledge on some of the attempted questions

Some of the candidates had scanty knowledge on the question they attempted thus leading to sketchy answers and consequently loss of marks.

The chief Examiner’s Recommendations

The following points are suggested as remedies to overcome candidates’ weaknesses:

  1. Practising map drawing:

Candidates are advised to practise map drawing and the insertion of        geographical features on maps across the various topics in the

curriculum to achieve mastery. Such maps should have keys for ease of reading and interpretation.

  1. Complete coverage of the syllabus

It is expected that candidates would start reading early enough for their examination in order to fully cover the syllabus before the examination commences. This will facilitate better understanding of the subject.

Candidates’ Strengths

Some of the candidates performed well in the question on statistics requiring the calculation of annual rainfall and the plotting of rainfall and temperature of the station across January to December. Some of the candidates were also able to perform well in the question on environmental degradation, consequences of deforestation and ways by which forest can be regenerated.
