3 Reasons Why Candidates Fail 2014 Commerce WAEC

Going by the data made available by the WAEC, the followings were pinned as reasons why Candidates fail 2014 Commerce WAEC. Carefully study the reasons, suggested and remedies if you are a prospective candidate or the subject teacher.

Some of the weaknesses observed in the candidates’ scripts are:

  1. Insufficient Knowledge of the Subject matter: Majority of the candidates did not have good understanding and knowledge of the subject, as a result they could not satisfactorily attempt some questions on insurance terms and concepts packaging, and contract of sale of goods which were in questions 4, 5 and 6 respectively.
  2. Poorly usage of English grammar: Most candidates could not explain their points in correct English grammar, thus they lost valuable marks.
  3. Majority of candidates avoided question 8 which was on calculation of assets, liabilities and capital.

WAEC Suggested Remedies

The following remedies were offered by the chief examiner in order to boost prospective candidate score, carefully take a look!

  1. The candidates should be encouraged to study standard and comprehensive text books on commerce in their preparation for the examination rather than relying on key-points.
  2. The teachers should endeavour to teach the candidates all aspect of syllabus. This will enable the candidates deepen their knowledge of the subject.
  3. Government and proprietors should endeavour to recruit qualified Business Education graduates to teach the subject. They should also ensure continuous training of the teachers.
  4. The candidates should endeavour to learn the rules of English grammar so as to enable them express their points clearly.

Candidate’s Strengths

The candidates shown appreciable effort in these areas:

  1. Candidates performed well in question number 1 which requires the comparison of public limited company with partnership under specific heading.
  2. Most of the candidates were able to define multiple stores and state its features which were in question number 2.
  3. Candidates did well in question number 3(A) which was on problem of barter system of trading.
  4. Candidates’ performance in question 7 which was on stock exchange market was excellent.
  5. Most of the candidates were able to organize their work very well.
  6. Few of candidates observed the rubrics and attempted the required number of questions.
