ASPECT: SPEECH WORK

TOPIC: Contrast of Monophthongs /u/ and /u: / and /ᴧ/ and/æ/

/u/ – This is a short, back, half close, rounded vowel sound.  This vowel has the following spelling symbols.

‘o’ –  e.g.; wolf, woman, bosom

‘oo’ –  e.g.; cook, good, wood, foot, hook, shook e. t. c.

‘ou’  –  e.g.;  courier, could, should, would

‘u’    –  e.g.; put, sugar, cushion, butcher, bush e. t. c.

Note:  In most cases, when ‘oo’ comes before a ‘k’, as well as‘t’ and‘d’, it represents /ʋ/.  However, in ‘food’, ‘oo’ represents /u: /.

/u: / –   This is a long, back, close, rounded vowel sound.  The common spelling symbols are listed below:

‘o’    e. g.  lose, womb, tomb, who, more, prove e. t. c.

‘oo’  e. g. boot, spoon, mood, fool, loose, school, e. t .c

‘ew’  e. g. threw shrewd, crew, new, screw, nephew, chew, e. t. c.

‘eu’   e. g. Zeus, pseudonym, rheumatic, pneumatic, feud, e. t. c.

‘u’     e. g. rude, June, lucid, truth, flute, education, e. t. c.

‘ue’   e. g. queue, glue, value, venue, virtue, true, due, e. t. c.

‘ui’    e. g.  cruise, bruise, suitable, lawsuit, juice, fruit, e. t. c.

‘oe’   e. g.  shoe, canoe, wooed, e. t. c.

‘ou’  e. g.  rouge, coup, youth, troupe, soup, you, louvre, e. t. c.

‘eau’  e. g.  beauty, beautify, beautiful, e. t.c.

‘iew’ e. g. view, e. t. c.
