10 Reasons Why Candidates Fail WAEC Chemistry 2018 Theory

The reasons for passing a subject are not as complex as the reasons for failing the same subject, because, every omission is penalized. Therefore, WAEC has identified the Reasons Why Candidates Fail WAEC Chemistry 2018 Theory. Beyond the year, the same reasons can make a student fails the subject any year because the dynamism in education doesn’t cover negligence.

The Candidates’ Weakness includes:

  1. did not show basic understanding of simple concepts in Chemistry;
  2. did not adhere to instructions as they relate to each question;
  3. exhibited poor communication skill;
  4. could not correctly define fermentation reaction;
  5. wrote the formula of acid instead of name;
  6. could not draw the graphical illustration of Charles’ law correctly;
  7. could not write complete definition when required;
  8. could not explain the chemistry behind the rate of corrosion of tin coated plate and a galvanized plate;
  9. could not name two factors which determine the choice of an indicator for an acid-base titration;
  10. could not draw and label a diagram for the laboratory preparation of a dry sample of Sulphur(IV)oxide.

The Council’s Remedies

Fortunately, WAEC provides all-encompassing remedies to the students, so as to mitigate the number of candidates that will fail.

Candidates should:

  5. be familiar with the examination syllabus;
  6. learn how to write and balance chemical equations correctly;
  7. learn how to write IUPAC names of compounds correctly;
  8. improve on their study habit.

Candidates’ strengths

Generally speaking, the students attempt the following questions appropriately, they are:

  1. correctly named the catalyst used for fermentation
  2. gave the names of heavy chemicals
  3. listed properties of aluminium
  4. correctly defined esterification reaction
  5. mentioned the uses of alkyl alkanoates
  6. named ore of iron
  7. described acidic reaction on litmus paper
  8. gave two disadvantages of hardness in water
